I thought of our guests who live outdoors. As scary as it was for those of us who are housed, what if you had no safe place to go in an emergency or natural disaster?
Imagine not having anywhere to store your things.
No restrooms readily available to you, no place to clean your body or even wash your hands.
When we’re sick, it just feels awful. We tell ourselves we’ll absolutely appreciate feeling well when we are better. Imagine the flu, except you’re sleeping on the street?
At Helping Hands, we warmly greet our unhoused neighbors every weekend. We work with other agencies and community efforts to improve their lives and find housing, medical care, and hope.
This happens slowly over time, by putting in the time needed to get to know someone and being a safe space again and again for them—by simply showing up. Our unhoused guests know us by name and if someone’s not there on a given weekend, they are missed.
This is what we do at Helping Hands. We build relationships. We show up. We care. We see what needs to be done and we do it. We treat everyone with the dignity they deserve simply by being human.
If you’re so inclined, please join us in this ministry of welcoming. In a world where judgement, hate, and anger seem to be gaining ground—be part of the antidote.
Donations are gratefully accepted. Be a part of the solution. Thank you.
